10 Best Anime Starring Usopp's Voice Actor Kappei Yamaguchi

Usopp shares the same voice actor with these iconic anime characters. This goes to show how good the voice actor is.

Right now One Piece has, fortunately, come back after a month-long hiatus in its most exciting moments after the studio, Toei Animation, got hacked. Now, fans can finally witness a truly epic battle onscreen soon, starring all our favorite Straw Hats. One of the most popular, of course, is Usopp, voiced by prolific Japanese voice actor Kappei Yamaguchi.

Usopp is known for his intelligence in being able to defeat stronger opponents due to his cowardly nature, frequently using deceptions, trickery, and wits to fight opponents. If you're a fan of Usopp, you might be surprised to learn of some of the other, far less cowardly roles, Kappei Yamaguchi has also voiced.

10 Detective Conan: Shinichi Kudo

conan adult and kid form

Shinichi Kudo, alias Conan Edogawa, is the protagonist of Detective Conan. Despite being a teenager, after being injected with poison Conan finds himself the same height as a first-grader -  which makes it even harder for him to solve crimes. As well as playing a bunch of background voice extra parts in the anime, Yamaguchi took on this titular role with Noriko Hidaka, who played Sera a co-detective in the anime.

Interestingly, this isn't the first time the two voice actors have found themselves working side by side. They've previously collaborated on multiple successful anime franchises including playing the main characters Inuyasha and Kikyo in Inuyasha, Feitan and Shalnark in Hunter X Hunter, and Usopp and Bellemere in One Piece.

9 Magic Kaito: Kaitō Kuroba

A story about a master illusionist/ phantom thief, Magic Kaito brilliantly utilizes magic tricks to perform crimes. Kaito Kuroba is the protagonist of Magic Kaito and a character of Detective Conan (same world anime). Kaito uses his magic as he investigates his father's death and seeks out the most expensive jewels.

Interestingly, Yamaguchi was chosen to voice both titular characters even though they share the same universe and there are even fight scenes between Shinichi and Kaitō, which effectively means Yamaguchi was just arguing with himself.

8 Inuyasha: Inuyasha

inuyasha protagonist

Inuyasha is the tale of Inuyasha, a half-demon dog that sought the Shikon jewel, a powerful jewel, in order to become a full demon, only to be sealed for 50 years. After being released by Kagome, the reincarnation of Kikyo (his former lover and the one who sealed him), the jewel gets split, and he meets several companions as they fight Naraku, the series' main antagonist.

Inuyasha can be arrogant and conceited but goes out of his way to protect his friends. He progressively loses interest in obtaining the jewel for himself but is occasionally tempted to do so. Among the characters on this list, Yamaguchi's voice as Inuyasha is closest to One Piece's Usopp. In an interview, Yamaguchi stated that he began to play Inuyasha with the goal of making the character progressively more like himself as the series went on.

7 Hunter X Hunter: Feitan Portor

Hunter x Hunter Villains — Feitan Portor

Hunter X Hunter follows the story of a young boy who seeks to become a hunter and meet his father who is a world-renowned hunter. Feitan Portor is a member of the Phantom Troupe, one of the main villains of Hunter X Hunter. He is the group's interrogator and a proficient torturer. Feitan is also a sadist who enjoys conflicting pain on others, despite claiming that he "feels sorry" for his victims. After their leader, Chrollo was taken and had his abilities sealed, Feitan became the de facto leader of the group until Chrollo's return.

This is not the first time Yamaguchi and Chrollo's voice actor Mamoru Miyano have worked together. The two actors are also responsible for lending their voices to Death Note's two min characters -L, the detective, and Light Yagami, the serial killer protagonist.

6 Yu Yu Hakusho: Jin

jin the wind tamer

Yu Yu Hakusho is a story of a Yusuke Urameshi who got killed an resurrected, gaining powers afterward which he uses to fight against demons and people with strange powers. One of the demons, Jin, the "Wind Tamer" is an opponent and main character in Dark Tournament Arc, but becomes allies with him later.

Although active in the industry since 1985, this is only the fourth ever television anime character that Yamaguchi voices, nearly ten years later in 1993.

5 Jujutsu Kaisen: Kechizu

Kechizu makes his entrance

In Jujutsu Kaisen, the characters frequently have to fight with enemy cursed energy users and cursed spirits. Kechizu is one of the cursed spirits, particularly a special grade Cursed Womb: Death Painting, whom Jujutsu Kaisen's most intelligent characters, Nobara and Yuji fight.

Kechizu is one of nine death painting wombs that were formed from women who bore cursed spirit children. Among the three Death Painting Womb brothers, he is the most immature and is loyal to his kind's commands. Yamaguchi stretched his voice acting chops for the role taking on the part of the villainous character, and although his run was highly popular this is definitely the last Jujutsu Kaisen has seen of him, as Kechizu at least, as the character was defeated by the anime's heroes.

4 JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Shigekiyo Yangu

Shigekiyo Yangu is a side character in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable, and an extremely annoying one at that. As a socially inept person, he is overjoyed after becoming friends with Josuke Higashikata and Okuyasu Nijimura. In his death, he was able to give the main characters a clue about the main villain's identity.

Shingekiyo was killed by DIU's main antagonist, Yoshikage Kira after their possessions were swapped. A fun fact is that while Shigekiyo and Kira are voiced by Inuyasha's and Naraku's (Inuyasha's antagonist) voice actors, their fates are reversed.

3 Persona 4: Teddie

teddie or kuma from persona 4

Teddie, also known as Kuma, is a character in the anime version of Persona 4, which revolves around investigating murders in their town and saving people's lives from danger. Kuma is a bizarre part-clown, a part-bear-like entity who lives inside the TV world and assists Yu Narukami and his friends in his investigations.

The character of Teddie is also a big part of Persona 4's video game, and Yamaguchi continued to lend his talents to the role for the game adaptation of the anime, helping create a feeling of continuity that fans appreciate.

2 Death Note: L

L LAWLIET detective

One of the most beloved characters in anime,  L, is the most popular investigator in Death Note who is tasked with apprehending the serial killer Kira, who is the series' main character Light Yagami. As soon as he notices the rapid rate of criminals' demise, he publicly challenges Kira and declares his intent on catching him.

L is the smartest investigator in Death Note.  He is secretive and persistent and wastes no chances in taking down his opponents, regardless of how risky it would be for him. Despite anime's tendency for dramatic exclamations and loud voices, L is known for his slow, calm demeanour, something which Yamaguchi perfectly brings to life, encapsulating the same feeling as L from the manga.

1 Ranma ½: Ranma Saotome

Ranma and Akane in Ranma 1/2

Ranma ½  chronicles Ranma and Akane on their humorous escapades as they face off against various opponents, find new romantic interests, and irritate each other, while their engagement looms. Ranma Saotome is a teenage kid who has been a martial artist since childhood.

Ranma is cursed to turn into a girl when sprayed with cold water, while hot water turns him back into a boy, as a result of an accident in China. Ranma Saotome is the debut anime character Kappei Yamaguchi has voiced in 1989. Kappei Yamaguchi and Noriko Hidaka (Akane) would later also star together in Inuyasha, where they would voice the main characters Inuyasha and Kagome respectively.
