Jojo's Bizarre Adventure's Stone Ocean introduces plenty of great characters to the series. From Jolyne to Weather Report, who stands out?
Part 6 of Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, Stone Ocean, is finally being animated and released on Netflix, introducing viewers to a host of new Jojo characters. Starring the first female Joestar, Stone Ocean follows Jolyne Cujoh as she tries to save her father, Jotaro Cujo, while locked up in prison. Featuring new Stands and Stand battles, new allies, and enemies, and new convoluted plotlines and scenarios, it's everything Jojo fans have come to love and more.
Stone Ocean has a comparably much smaller cast than Golden Wind, centering tightly around a core group of characters for the duration of the series. This means fans get much more time to get to know main characters like Ermes and Pucci--as well as more time to pick their favorites.
8 Narciso Anasui
Anasui is, by his own admission, not well. He's a serial killer who seems largely unapologetic and straightforward about his actions, and is apparently so unstable he's only kept in check by Weather Report's mild-mannered energy. One of the most underrated anime villains, Anasui dismembers his victims and then rearranges them into usable tools without flinching, especially in comparison to his obsessive love for Jolyne.
In many ways, Anasui's love for Jolyne mirrors Pucci's feelings for DIO--destructive, all-consuming, and fatal. Like Pucci's belief that DIO will lead him to Heaven, Anasui thinks Jolyne will 'purify' him. While Anasui will genuinely do anything to protect Jolyne and help her, his uncontrollable feelings ultimately lead to tragedy. But it's these flaws and parallels that make Anasui such an interesting and memorable character.
7 Whitesnake
Despite being just a Stand, Whitesnake has a distinctive personality and some amount of autonomy from Pucci. For much of Stone Ocean, Whitesnake is the one actually putting Pucci's plans into action and thus is who the audience sees more often, making it almost an antagonist in its own right. As opposed to many other Stands, Whitesnake often talks of its own volition, rather than only as a mouthpiece for Pucci, and has plenty to say on the nature of the world and its observations of the characters.
These unique traits make Whitesnake stand out, but its transformation throughout the series is what has made it one of the most important characters in Stone Ocean. As Pucci's plans progress, Whitesnake gains more and more power until it eventually evolves into what DIO has devised as "the ultimate Stand": Made in Heaven. As Made in Heaven, Whitesnake's powerful time travel ability is responsible for fundamentally changing the course of Jojo's Bizarre Adventure--the full effects of which are still being explored.
6 Weather Report
Weather Report's sudden unexpected heel-turn is one of the most memorable moments of Stone Ocean. When he's introduced, Weather is a quiet, deeply eccentric amnesiac whose quirks were entertaining and endearing, and whose compassion led to him almost painfully dying to save Jolyne. Weather is even able to keep Anasui subdued, a pretty significant feat considering the man's seemingly uncontrollable violence.
Weather with his memories is an apathetic, embittered man with a singular desire to kill Pucci. He still retains his principles and defends Jolyne, but he is much, much different from the strange, gentle man the audience has known. With his Stand's mysterious and often inexplicable abilities, Weather Report's newfound destructive impulse makes him capable of incredible and terrible things. Weather's complexity has made him an unforgettable character, for better or worse.
5 Emporio Alnino
Living secretly within green Dolphin Street Prison, Emporio is almost just as much a ghost as anything his Stand creates. Although only a child, Emporio has survived for years sneaking around the prison, using his Stand and his knowledge of its layout to evade detection. His simple innocence and depth of heart are enough to even sway Anasui and Weather, who are both killers, and more than to capture fans' hearts.
Emporio, really, has nothing to prove, being a lonely child who already has provided the protagonists with plenty of help, but his actions in the finale are incredibly impressive. Emporio stands against Pucci, after watching everyone he knows die and defeats him. Despite his circumstances, Emporio is a kind, compassionate boy who risks everything in order to help Jolyne and ultimately, becomes Stone Ocean's hero.
4 F.F
Foo Fighters ('F.F') is one of the most unique and strange characters in all of Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. Unlike Whitesnake, F.F. isn't just a Stand with a lot of personality, but also a user who is paired with hyper-intelligent plankton half-possessing the corpse of a girl they murdered. Like a lot of things in Jojo, it just works.
F.F's is driven by the concept of intellect and gaining life experience, pledging loyalty to Jolyne because she gave F.F the opportunity to live as a human. F.F's curiosity drives her to always ask questions and experiment, leading her to become more and more 'human' over the course of this series. Her arc is one of the best in Stone Ocean, growing from a bunch of evil swamp plankton to a fully-realized being and devoted friend.
3 Enrico Pucci
Stone Ocean's primary antagonist is a complicated man. Both a religious fanatic chasing the image of 'Heaven' and an immoral murderer content with using whatever methods necessary to achieve DIO's goal, Pucci is anxious, determined, obsessed, devoted, and merciless all at once. His guilt over his sister's death fuels his obsession with fate, which further feeds his radical devotion and love for DIO, which has robbed him of all morals when it comes to reaching Heaven.
Pucci's goal of showing people 'their true destiny' is almost righteous, and there is something about his genuine love for DIO that proves he does have heart, but this all only makes him a more capable antagonist. Pucci is extremely, viciously efficient and effective, and his actions have left a permanent, long-running impact on Jojo's Bizarre Adventure as a whole.
2 Ermes Costello
Jolyne's right-hand woman, Ermes is one of the best sidekicks in all of Jojo. Driven by her desire to avenge her beloved sister's murder, she tries to remain emotionally distant and unattached, which makes her developing friendship with Jolyne all the more satisfying as a character arc. Ermes often acts as the practical and pragmatic voice, edging into brutal honesty, and her ability to quickly adapt to her circumstances makes her an invaluable ally for Jolyne.
Ermes is far from afraid to backtalk or speak her mind in any situation, and is willing to use underhanded tactics to achieve success--making watching her devise and enact her strategies always a good time. Under her tough exterior, Ermes has a genuine depth of emotion and a deep loyalty to Jolyne, sticking with her to the very end.
1 Jolyne Cujoh
Stone Ocean's very own Jojo, Jotaro Kujo's estranged daughter proves herself more than worthy of taking on his former protagonist role. Starting off the series over-whelmed and out of her depth, Jolyne adapts to her situation pretty quickly, showing the resolve that the Joestars are known for. Even though she has no experience with Stands, she is able to quickly master Stone Free and find creative and strategic methods for her strings.
Brash, assertive, and quick-thinking, Jolyne isn't afraid to be confrontational or even violent and is hardly bothered by breaking rules or possibly putting herself in a little bit of danger. And while she doesn't flinch at cutting her enemies to pieces, she is ultimately a selfless and deeply moral person--doing whatever it takes to keep her friends and family safe.
